How to prepare for the footy season with AFL beanies

The new season of AFL is at our doorstep and it is time to get ready for another year of quality football.

While the AFLX might be whetting our appetite right now, it is mere weeks until the real thing kicks off, with a host of teams in contention to lift the trophy at seasons end.

Here is your guide for preparing for the upcoming season with (pro tip: get your AFL beanies ready). Expect to see a host of changes to the game – from new faces, through to rookies looking to make their mark and teams hunting ways to etch their names into the history of the sport.

Check the schedule and plan accordingly

This season, games will be spread across the country, with fixtures already set for additional locations across Canberra, Launceston, Ballarat, Townsville, Darwin, Hobart and Alice Springs. Check your team’s schedule; there could be some great holiday opportunities for you along the way.

Know the changes to the league

There are nine rule changes that the AFL will roll out this coming season, which means you need to get to know them before roaring your disapproval at the officials over a changed call.

  • The centre bounce will revert to a traditional structure, with four midfielders inside the centre square and two wingmen just outside. Everyone else will be inside 50.
  • For kick-ins, the marker now must stand back 10 metres, not five, while a player no longer has to kick to themselves to play on from the goal square.
  • When defenders take a mark or receive a free kick 9 metres or less from goal, the marker must be in line with the goal square.
  • There will be restrictions on runners and water carriers. Runners can only enter the playing surface after a goal has been kicked and must leave before play restarts. Water carriers are not permitted on the field during live play.
  • Players cannot set up behind the umpires during the centre bounce to avoid collisions with officials.
  • For 50 metre penalties, the offending side must not impede the other side from advancing the ball 50 metres while the team in attack can play on while the 50 metres is being measured.
  • Kicks after the siren as a result of a mark or free kick must be line with the marker and the goal.
  • The ‘hands in the back’ rule has been repealed. Shoves are still outlawed
  • The ruckman ‘prior opportunity’ rule will be disregarded when they take direct possession of a centre bounce, throw up or boundary throw in.

Get your new jersey(s)

Many sides have tweaked their jerseys over the off-season, while you may find your old supporters kit is in need of replacement. Lots of teams have also included alternative strips as well, for specific rounds, which are well worth checking out if you plan on attending those games. Top it off with  AFL beanies online through our range, and you’re almost set.
